From Koblenz to Mainz and back - 03|2011

In the springtime 2011 I did an spontaneous cycling trip to Mainz to visit an couchsurfer who actually had intended to visit Koblenz, but plans had changed.

It was a wondeful trip and I can highly recommend the route between Koblenz and Bingen as it has to so much to see and such wonderful pretty towns along the route to stroll along. And of course Koblenz and Mainz themselfes are wonderful cities :)

(i) advice It can get pretty cold in the shade and as the hills are very steep on this route, at certain hours of the day there will be only shade on the route.
And a funny thing: Both on the way to Mainz and on the way back I had headwind.

Have a look yourself:

on the way there

Once around GE - summer 2014

The idea for this trip is two years old. In my second year at university I got the idea for it. I guess it was because of the lessons we had in the room at uni, which is decorated with those great big maps of Germany.

  • So first my motivation:
I've been in Ireland for half a year and I have seen lots of different parts of that land. Back in Germany I realized that I know only very little parts of Germany. Mostly Lower-Saxony, where I come from.
  • Second the idea:
Therefore I had the idea to cycle once around Germany following the borders.
In the next years I planed the route more or less as well as I started to get the equipment for the trip.

the route

I'm going to start the trip in Aachen as it is the closest border city from cologne. - Actually I want to start in cologne, but thats not a border city. - From Aachen I will cycle south since I want to travel the borders counterclockwise. I hope this will bless me with nice weather on each stage. The headed are the following:

bicycle route distance legs
3-Länder-Route from Aachen to Konz/Trier 3 Etappen, 230 km
Saar/Saarland from Konz to Saargemünd 2 Etappen, 94 km

Rhein from Karlsruhe to Bodensee 6 Etappen, 400 km
Bodensee 1 Etappe, 65 km
